This 1016 is in overall great, attractive condition. The case is in great condition with normal signs of wear. Behind the 11o'clock lug has some small hand written numbers that appear to be watchmakers marks. The numbers are visible between the lugs. The dial has developed patina and has a few marks that can be hard to notice. The dial has color changed from black to brown throughout and the three o'clock side (towards the edge) of the dial is darker than the rest of the dial. The lume on the dial has developed patina and aged to an attractive yellow color. The hands have developed patina and the lume in the hands have been redone/ color corrected to match the color of the lume on the dial. The USA jubilee bracelet has 20 links and is in good condition with normal signs of wear and some stretch between the links which is not uncommon.
Rolex introduced the 1016 Explorer in 1959, and it remained in production until 1989, making it one of the brand's longest-running references. Early in its production, Rolex used glossy dials, later transitioning to matte dials around 1966. The example we have here, circa 1966, features the last variation of glossy dial before the switch.
Originally, this watch had a black dial, but over the years, it has developed a beautiful brown patina, a hallmark of "tropical" Explorer dials. These dials often age unevenly, adding to their unique charm. Collectors are particularly drawn to tropical dials because each one ages differently, making them one of a kind.
Upon closer inspection of the movement, we can see the "ROW" stamp, which was the US import code for Rolex at the time, indicating that this watch was destined for the US market. It came on this USA Jubilee bracelet which makes sense - we love it when these details line up.
